That iPhone update thing

Tried publishing as an edit, didn’t work, so, now it’s a new post. Oh well. Now that the furor has turned into a low growl, a few thoughts. I’d “hacked” my phone with iFuntastic. Mostly because I missed the ringtones on my E61, where I could pick any media file on my phone to play. So, I tossed in a few of those ringtones. Yeah, I get that the RIAA figured out there was big money in ringtones, so they came up with special licensing to extract money for that too.

Nice OSX Leopard feature

Was going to do a “nice little things about Leopard” post, but that’s not coming together. So, I thought I’d post one of my favorite features. Mail context-sensitive text. I found the first bit by accident, ran my mouse over a name in an email message, and a popup frame faded in around the name. Clicking on it I had the option to “Show in Address book”. So, Mail.app had scanned the mail, found names it knew in the address book, and they were clickable.

But I don't want to share my entire life with you

Google released a Facebook app that’ll let me put my web queries in a feed so my friends can see my search and results. Now, I hear that the app doesn’t actually work, but this was one of those “but why would I do that?” moments for me. I use Facebook. So far, my “friends” there are about 98% work folks who are using it, and for some their first real foray into an “online community”, which is great.

Syncing iPhone with multiple computers

I finally got around to trying this, and swapping back and forth a bunch of times, and this does work, with caveats, and I did only try the one mode I was interested in, heck, it took me this long to try that! OK, so I wanted to sync my music/photos/podcasts/video from my home machine, where all that stuff is sitting on, as you might remember, a Ready NAS hooked up to the PowerMac.

Nice iPhone touches

I ran across a cool features on the iPhone last night that I found one of those happy Apple UI details. I have one of my home phone numbers assigned to two contacts, me, and “home”. A call came in from that number, and the display said “Ken or Home”. Took a second for that to register, since I’d never have expected the phone to scan my whole phonebook, have a list of contacts with the same number, and then present that when a call was coming in!

iPhone happiness

Decided not to write a lengthy “me to” blog entry evaluating my iPhone. But, figured I’d drop a note. Like everyone else says, and as I expected, it’s a really amazing device, looks great, interaction is groundbreaking and amazing, some of it’s features are quirky or incomplete, and some functionality of other phones just isn’t there. I don’t miss MMS (never sent one), would like real IM, and features I didn’t have on my E61 like video would be cool someday.

Upgrading and Software Appliance goodness

For my personal web hosting, I use a service provider (Bluehost), and in the spirit of using a hosting provider, try to use their tools to actually manage the site. Figure that’ll give me the best feeling for what folks who don’t just “pop into the shell” go through. So, I used Fantastico on my hosting provider to install WordPress, even though that tends to keep you one or two versions back from the latest and greatest, since after a new version is released, the hosting provider has to try it, then after they try it, they upgrade the information for Fantastico to install.

Distracted

To my tens of followers, just thought I’d drop a note, since I’ve been nigh invisible of late. Heck, I haven’t even been twittering! A series of at-home issues has been keeping me a bit, um, distracted. Prepping a home for sale can be daunting, and I’m in the middle of being daunted. Being an old-school guy, overload in my personal life results in turning off the electronic one, since there’s not much extra synapse activity left for my “digital world”.
