Dune (2021)
Rating: 3 out of 5 Sandworms
Watched “Dune” last night. Have to preface this by saying I couldn’t slog my way through the book when I tried 30+ years ago. Bore-ing. Watched other adaptations, didn’t grok them either. So, I expected great visuals, but a confusing storyline. Well, it didn’t disappoint. But, since I didn’t expect to follow the story, it made a little more sense than expected, although I really need to read a cliff note version of who the factions are, and why their fighting. Just felt like the Trade Federation snoozefest that was “The Phantom Tollbooth Menace”
So, the movie… It was beautiful. What amazing production values, from the outfits to the weapons to the room decorations to the ships. Acting was good (and another Jason Momoa & Dave Bautista & Josh Brolin gathering), although I can figure out why Timothée Chalamet is such a big deal. I did enjoy whispering “Zendaya” every time she showed up (a lot, but only for a couple seconds each time). An aside, it was fun seeing Brolin next to Momoa, ’cause Brolin is a smallish guy, and Momoa towers over him, and is twice as wide. Actions scenes were good, sound was good (lots of low-end bass content), a few scenes were way too dark (visually), but all in all, pretty good visuals throughout.
